Employment Opportunity: Special Projects Lead


The First Nations Health Managers Association (FNHMA) is seeking an experienced Project Lead with exceptional organizational and facilitation skills to lead an exciting 2-year project. This initiative is designed to enhance the capacity of First Nations health leaders by developing and implementing a comprehensive public health workshop focused on the First Nations cancer journey. Key components of the workshop will include discussions on access to screening and preventive services, while integrating region-specific and jurisdictional learning through dynamic activities. The goal is to equip health leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to apply a public health approach within their programs and services, ultimately improving cancer care and health outcomes in First Nations communities.


The FNHMA is a national professional association committed to excellence in expanding health management capacity for First Nations. Our mandate includes providing leadership through certification, professional development, quality standards and practices, and research.


Scope of Position

As the Special Projects Lead, you will report to the Director of Programs. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the project to ensure timelines are met and budget constraints are respected. Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning, coordinating, and overseeing all project activities.

  • Collaborating with partners, consultants, and staff to ensure project success.

  • Developing and fostering new relationships with potential partners to advance project goals.

  • Managing the development of workshop curriculum and associated tools, and implementing a pilot workshop.

  • Guiding the development of an evaluation framework with the support of an external consultant.

  • Facilitating focus group discussions and evaluations for both large and small groups.

  • Providing regular updates and reports to senior management.

  • Performing other related project activities as required.

  • Supporting other FNHMA activities.


Qualifications and Skills
  • A post-secondary degree in public health, health administration or a related degree with at least 5 years of related experience, preferably with an Indigenous organization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of First Nations health services management, including current and historical issues affecting First Nations peoples.

  • Proven experience in managing similar projects, ideally in the health sector.

  • Experience gathering and utilizing knowledge gained through engagement activities, such as focus groups and key informant interviews.

  • Experience with environmental scans, supporting evaluations, and performing research.

  • Experience developing curriculum/workshops/training materials for adult learners.

  • Strong organizational and planning abilities, with attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality deliverables on time.

  • Ability to exercise judgment, tact, innovation, and initiative.

  • Capacity to work under pressure, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Bilingualism (English/French) and fluency or familiarity with First Nations languages are considered strong assets.

Job Type:  2-Year Term employment with a possibility of extension.

Work Location: Ottawa (satellite office), remote work may be considered. Occasional travel required.
