What motivated you to pursue the Certified First Nations Health Managers Program (CFNHMP)?

In 2019, I transitioned from my role as Finance and Human Resources Manager to that of Executive Director within the organization. Throughout my time at Charles J Andrew Healing Centre, I have been actively involved in various working groups and have remained deeply committed to the mission and values of our programs. I have always sought opportunities to learn and contribute further to the organization, and I believe that obtaining this certification has greatly enhanced my ability to lead a more successful program.

Has obtaining your CFNHM designation enhanced your professional skills and knowledge? If so, how?

Overall, the CFNHM certification helps to develop the leadership and management expertise necessary to address the health needs of Indigenous peoples and communities, ensuring that services are both effective and culturally appropriate. The core competencies of a CFNHM have been both a gentle reminder and an opportunity for me to build on my skill set as a leader in the organization.

Can you share a specific example of how the program has positively impacted your career or work within your industry?

I found the course to be incredibly valuable, as I was able to apply my own work-life experience to the course content. Each assignment was directly aligned with my current practices, allowing me to explore ways to build partnerships and compare best practices from other organizations to enhance systems, processes, and policies.

In your opinion, what sets this certification program apart from others in the health management field?

This is my first certification in health management, in addition to holding certifications in Finance and Human Resources from AFOA. I believe this certification program is highly relevant to my leadership role and responsibilities within the organization. It provided practical, real-world insights that were directly applicable to my professional responsibilities.

How has the CFNHMP helped you stay updated with the latest industry trends and best practices?

The CFNHMP has helped me stay up to date with the latest industry trends and best practices by providing access to current resources, ongoing professional development opportunities, and networking with other professionals in the field, ensuring the highest quality of service delivery in my role.

Can you describe any specific challenges or obstacles you overcame while completing the CFNHM program?

The biggest challenge for me was managing my already busy workload while gaining the certification. You have to be really committed, focused and dedicated to achieve success.

How would you describe the value of this certification program for professionals looking to enhance their credentials or advance their careers as a First Nations health leader?

I recommend this course to all my leaders in the organization. The value of the course content is relatable to all positions in leadership roles.

In what ways has the CFNHMP expanded your professional network and opportunities for collaboration?

The CFNHMP has expanded my professional network by connecting me with a diverse group of health management professionals and leaders all across Canada. Throughout the course I have gained valuable opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnerships that have provided new perspectives on health management

Have you received any recognition or professional opportunities because of completing this certification program?

I am truly honored to have been selected for the Doris Bear Award. Named after a respected leader in the field, this prestigious recognition is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing health management and leadership within First Nations communities. The award acknowledges those who demonstrate exceptional dedication, innovation, and a commitment to improving health outcomes and services.

What advice do you have for professionals considering enrolling in the CFNHMP?

My advice for professionals considering the CFNHMP is to approach the program with a commitment to learning and applying new skills. The program offers practical insights that directly align with real-world health management challenges, so be prepared to actively engage and relate the material to your own experiences. It's a great opportunity to enhance your leadership capabilities and expand your network, so take full advantage of the resources and connections it provides.
