Senior Policy Analyst – Non-Insured Health Benefits

The Assembly of First Nations is seeking an experienced and highly skilled individual who will be responsible for gathering and researching information to support and advance First Nations interests and advocacy in the area of Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB). This position will also involve NIHB and Jordan’s Principle liaison with other Sectors and require the coordination and participation of various national NIHB committees and working groups.

In addition, the candidate should have a good understanding of health issues, education, national evaluations, research, as well as an advanced understanding of national, regional, and sub-regional First Nations organizations and First Nations and Indigenous institutions working in health, education and social services.

The incumbent will also be responsible for developing a work plan with defined objectives aimed at supporting and advancing First Nations interests through AFN’s resolutions, national advocacy positions and strategies.

Applicants must possess:

•         A post-secondary degree directly related to political science or social sciences with 5+ years’ relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

•         A minimum of 5+ years of positive experience working with First Nations and/or First Nations programs and policies

•         Advanced knowledge and understanding and demonstrated expertise with respect to policies, programs and legislation related to First Nations health, education, and/or social services.

•         The ability to analyze complex information/data, and to communicate this concisely to a variety of audiences (e.g., officials, portfolio-holders, Chiefs, etc.)

•         Superior written and verbal skills, including the ability to use appropriate terminology

•         Familiarity with the manipulation and analysis of data using databases such as Excel

•         Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply effective research techniques, including with respect to confidentiality and ethics

•         Ability to develop effective working relationships with others, both inside and outside of the organization

•         Advanced interpersonal skills, professionalism, teamwork, and judgement

•         Sound planning and organization skills with the ability to multi-task while working under pressure and with competing deadlines

•         English is the working language although the ability to communicate effectively in French or an Indigenous language would be an asset
